Green Deal UK
The Green Deal UK is a government backed initiative designed to improve the energy efficiency of your home or business premises by installing Green Deal UK products (they are commonly referred to as ‘Measures’) without paying any upfront costs. You pay back the costs of improving the property through your energy bill over a period of 10 to 25 years. This is unlike a conventional loan because the bill stays with the property and not with the customer. This means you can make your property nicer, greener, more energy efficient and add value to your property from the improvements but you don’t have to worry about being tied to a debt for the improvements if you sell your property.
How does the Green Deal UK work?
First, you need to have a Green Deal Assessment completed on your property. This will be carried out by a certified Green Deal UK Assessor. The cost of which is typically around £150 per Green Deal Assessment on each property. This is mandatory and you will not be able to benefit from the Green Deal Scheme without this assessment.
Once you have your Green Deal UK Assessment, this will outline all the potential improvements you will be eligible for and the potential savings on your energy bill. This report will confirm which Green Deal UK Products can be installed in your home under your Green Deal Plan. This may include a new boiler, windows, doors, insulation, draft exclusions, to name just a few. You will be able to take that report to any Green Deal UK Provider that is offering the best incentives.
Everything is subject to the Green Deal’s Golden Rule, all improvement costs must be able to be paid back by the potential savings in your energy bill over a 10 to 25 year period. Remember the Golden Rule is there to protect you, you will not pay any more in your energy bills even after the work has been undertaken, in a lot of cases you will still see a reduction in your energy costs.
Next you choose your Green Deal UK Provider, it does not have to be your current energy supplier, you can shop around to see which Green Deal UK Provider is offering the best incentives. The Green Deal Provider will organise everything including co-ordinating the installers to come and carry out the work in your property and will send you annual reports as to the status of the loan attached to the property.
Once the work is completed you will benefit from a much nicer place to live or work, you may have added value to your property and be doing your bit to save the environment plus in a lot of cases still receive savings in your energy bills.
